Agricultural Economics and Extension

 

The Agricultural Economics Research Program focuses on the empowerment of the role of agricultural research efforts in such a way that they can efficiently contribute to the development of the agriculture sector through generation of information that enhance internal and external research efficiency; identification of challenges and opportunities in major agroecologies and farming systems of the country; and assessment of technology extension and its impact in the livelihood of farmers.

 

The program will also have crucial roles in the development of alternative agricultural development policies by, in accordance with the market-led economic policy of the government, identifying research outputs that are well-suited for export markets, analyzing their market and production chains, and proposing alternative policy ideas for value-addition.

 

An integrated effort of various regional and federal stakeholders in generating problem-solving and demand-oriented agricultural outputs through crop, livestock, soil and water conservation, forestry, and agricultural mechanization research, the program will significantly contribute for the success of the research by studying and providing workable information on the economic feasibility and social acceptance of technologies.

 

The Components

 

Farming system

Focuses on the provision of information and knowledge that are demand-oriented and in consideration of opportunities and challenges in various agro-of the country.

 

Feasibility and Technological Change

Aims to generate information put forward recommendations that help determine the feasibility, profitability, effectiveness, enterprise choice and cost of production of agricultural technologies generated by the research and crop and livestock production activities that are carried out by smallholder farmers in various agroecological zones of the country, and those that help prevent the occurrence of high-level equilibrium gaps by resolving specific challenges that affect technological change and thereby ensure availability of abundant production. 

 

Agricultural Marketing and Value Chain Development

Ensures the provision of information and recommendations that: help ensure food security on household level and resolve the challenges of marketing systems, enhance the efficiency of agricultural product value chains, end strengthen supporting services (of, for instance, associations, input suppliers, financial institutions, and extension), by, among others, transforming the agricultural system of the country into a market-oriented one and ensuring products are subjects to value additions and determining market class/grades for major product types.

 

Technology Extension Impact

Undertakes analyses of the level of acceptability/extension of research-generated agricultural technologies, study and evaluate their overall economic and social impact on the technology-using society, pinpoint possible research directions and generate related information

 

 

Agricultural Vulnerability

Agricultural practices in Ethiopia are known to be vulnerable to various risk factors such as climate, market price, and animal and crop diseases, the combination of which puts risk to the livelihood of smallholder farmers in the country. The research in this regard strives to ensure availability of information, knowledge and recommendations that help alleviate risk vulnerabilities and increase productivity in the agriculture sector.

 

The Agricultural Extension Research Program can help agricultural research achieve its role of advancing and modernizing the agriculture sector by implementing intensified extension programs and undertake the introduction of research-generated technologies on extensive farms by way of translational research packages and demonstrations;  creating technology demands on the part of smallholder farmers and investors; and by enhancing the accessibility of technologies through strengthening of seed multiplication and the seed system, itself.

 

Particularly, in emerging regions where the level of technology accessibility, multiplication and supply is low, the extension program can play a crucial role in advancing the research capacities of the regions by implementing intensified translational research activities that are carried out in an integrated manner, and by practically demonstrating the feasibility of research technologies on extensive farms and thereby creating a wide-scale demand for the technologies.

 

The Components

 

Translational Research

Involves the testing of research-generated technologies for their feasibility for commercial-level production in selected areas and creating demands for them, enhance efficiency of research activities, pave the ground for a better seed multiplication system, generate basic information for a rapid transition of the technologies into the agricultural development efforts.

Extension approaches, mechanisms and system

Generate information that enhance and increase the effectiveness of the agricultural extension system; test various extension approaches and provide workable recommendations; generate information that strengthens the relationship between actors of the agricultural development endeavor.

Gender-oriented research

Involves provision of gender-disaggregated data, knowledge and recommendations that help advance agricultural productivity and effectiveness.
